IT

jumpstart: The test of courage comes when we are in the minority. The test of tolerance comes when we are in the majority.   - Ralph W. Sockman

I’ve been busy with work lately and it’s has practically taken a toll on me. So it has hit me hard with sickness, sorry for the no updates period.

Our world now has a heavy reliance on Information Technology, and because of that most of us are computer illiterate.

ENIAC. World first digital computer.

I’m not sure i should say that i’m fortunate enough on this, but i did Informasi Teknologi as one of my subjects for SPM. Me and my classmates were the first bunch of white mice for the education ministry on this subject.

Well, it indeed gave me a headstart in the IT education system after i entered my university, but thats all to it.

Being the BolehLand, our educationist seems still to be living in the caves with Parameswara hiding under a banana tree.

You see, the Bolehland is striving for vision 2020, and to achive this, Bolehland needs lots and lots of knowledge workers to help boost this vision of reaching a developed country by that year.

And our educationist, some how got the wind to introduce Informasi Teknologi as a subject.

I applauded for our educationist for recognizing the importance of IT.

Then i spit.

The IT that i took for 2 years in my secondary school days are in Bahasa Malaysia.

WTF.

Huge potong stim man~

I have no understanding of what those cave man are trying to achieve while the whole world of IT will be in the international language of english.

I sincerely have no ill feelings towards Bahasa Malaysia and i do respect that it’s the mother touge of the Malays.

Bolehland windows98

But this is just plain ignorance and making fun out of it.

And i’m bloody sure they hired who ever that translate doreamon into Bahasa Malaysia to translate all the English IT jargon into Bahasa Malaysia.

Mother Board = papan induk
keyboard = papan kekunci
mouse = tetikus
server = pelayan
client = pelayar
network = rangkaian
joy stick = kayu ria
light pen = pen cahaya
hard disk = cakera keras
Random Access Memory (RAM) = Memori Capaian Rawak (MCR)
software = perisian

Now, try to read the above again like how doreamon’s voice is, and how he would whisk out his gadgets from his bottomless pouch.

You will laugh.

Encik Bill Banyak Pintu

Luckily, those cave men never write to Encik Bill Banyak Pintu (Mr. Bill Gates) to change Windows98 to Tingkap98.

Imagine if that would to happened and try to understand this:

If we would to muat turun perisian lanun from the Internet, there is a possibility that the aplikasi has virus (read: ve-ru-es) or barang pengintai that can occupy your memori capaian rawak.

(if we would to download pirated softwares from the Internet, there is a possibility that the application has virus or spyware that can occupy your RAM)

Then we would have to press kawal-gilir-hapus whenever we encounter a tabir biru kematian to bangkit semula our tingkap98.

(Then we would have to press ctrl-alt-del whenever we encounter a blue screen of death to boot up our windows98)

Happymah!~

I was attending a training in KL city today.

After my training, i followed one of my friend to low yat to get some computer hardware for his friend back at his mother land.

But his friend has some interesting requirements.

Has to be stylish, delivers a sense of class, highly impressive, weights light and physically small.

Best part is budget isn’t much of a constrain.

So we were debating on which would be a suitable lap top for his friend. At the end of the day, we narrow down to a few options.

And Apple’s Mac Book Air.

At first i disagree with my friend with the idea of Mac Book Air, my reasons was that it’s small and has no features at all. Worst if he is interested in running Microsoft Windows only.

For the money you are paying, you could get a better laptop which is jam pack of juice in it’s arsenal.

I even compared that the Mac Book Air is just like a big boob blond with no brains. Looks good, nice to feel and stupid to live with.

Even my friend agrees to a certain extent and said he would try to convince his friend not to buy the pretty fruit.

The next day, he said “I failed to convince my friend to buy Air”.

And so after training, we went to low yat to get a brand new Mac Book Air.

After experiencing the Air in the shop, I would have to agree that this is the ideal laptop for his friend.

You see, he is a business man, and business man often needs to impress clients and stand out by a mile compared with his competitors.

It’s a general rule in business world, first impression decides 50% or not if the sale goes through or not.

The Mac Book Air definitely delivers in terms of style and class.

Given it’s light weight and size, it gives you the wow factor to impress people around you. Just like when Steve Jobs pull the Air out from a normal mail envelope on the Apple’s keynote address.

It has it’s down side though, the Air only has 1 USB port.

It has the build in WIFI so there will be no Ethernet port.

No optical drive, getting an external Apple USB super drive cost you RM389, and if you’re using a wired/wireless mouse connected to the USB, say bye bye to it while you need to jack in the super drive. You may argue that you can buy a multi port USB hub, well that doesn’t solve the problem. Using the multi port, there won’t be enough power for both your wireless and super drive they’ll both die without power.

Mono speakers.

On the up side, like all Apple products, it delivers the style and simplistic design features.

It’s definitely as light as advertise and what impress me the most is actually there is a build in light sensor that will activate the keyboard’s back light if it detects that your surrounding environment is dark or dim.

The basic unit that my friend bought is RM6,299 excluding the Super Drive(RM389), USB Ethernet Port(RM119), hard plastic protective cover(RM128).

So would you buy one?

My answer yes if i would just use it for entertainment, surfing and meeting clients with it.

Other than that I would put much hope on it.

You decide.

Having been in the IT field, it has been customary when you start something that has an “output” capability with the “hello world” statement. Especially when it comes to programing languages.

It’s the easiest statement and output you can do. Really.

And so this shall be my virgin hello world post on www.onebigbone.com.

Alot of ppl, including those from non-IT background will definitely came accross the “hello world” statement or expression, but many, do not know the history of “hello world”.

Including those of IT background.
